By Stacey Bomser. You can help build a better world by reading and learning all summer long. The Miramar Branch Library is participating in Broward County Library’s 2017 Summer Learning Program. It provides reading and learning services to prevent summer learning loss during the school vacation months.
Build a Better World is this summer’s theme. It is open to all ages. As children track their reading and attend programs, they build skills that maintain or improve proficiency scores in reading, spelling, vocabulary, math and more. As adults read and enjoy the library programs, they not only have fun and build skills, but also model good learning behaviors to children in the community.
Every Wednesday at 1pm, children, ages five to eight, can Build a Better (Virtual) World with Nintendo Wii’s “Simanimals”. Players will solve puzzles and have fun creating a virtual environment for the animals and plants living there. The Reading Buddies program allows children to Build a Better World and improve their reading skills by reading to a teen volunteer from 3-4pm on Wednesday afternoons.
On Saturday, July 8th from 2-4pm, teenagers can help Build a Better World by creating handmade cards to be distributed to local hospitals and nursing homes. Teens can Make the World a Better Place through technological innovation on Saturday, July 15th from 2-4pm when Creation Station introduces students to Virtual and Augmented Reality. Program participants will get hands-on experience with Oculus Rift and Microsoft HoloLens. The program is free, but pre-registration is required; call 954-357-8180.
There are plenty of opportunities for adults to Build a Better World as well. Learn to live debt free and within your means on Tuesday, July 11th from 6-7:30pm, when a financial education outreach specialist teaches money management techniques. Build a Better World through inner peace at a Falun Dafa Workshop on Wednesday, July 12th, from 5:30-7:30pm. This ancient Chinese practice cultivates both mind and body through gentle Qigong exercise and meditation. You can Build a Better You at a Hatha Yoga class on Monday, July 31st from 6-7pm. All levels will practice breathing, balance, strength and stretching exercises followed by guided relaxation and meditation. Participants should bring water and a big towel or yoga mat.
The Build a Better World summer learning program is free. You can register at the Miramar Branch Library or online at http://www.broward.org/Library/Summer/Pages/register.aspx. It offers categories for all ages: Early Learner (birth to pre-K), Youth (kindergarten to 12-years-old); Teen (ages 13-17); and Adult (ages 18+).
Participants win prizes by completing and tracking reading goals as well as attending Build a Better World programs. Youth earn Brag Tags (fun dog tags to wear on a chain) by meeting their reading goals. All participants can earn free books and prizes; those who complete at least their first reading goal are eligible for grand prizes, which include Duplo sets, tablets, wireless headphones, or tickets to local museums and activities. The top readers could even win round-trip plane tickets.
The Build a Better World Summer Learning Program is sponsored by Broward Reads (the Broward County campaign for grade-level reading initiative), Broward County Public Schools, Broward Public Library Foundation, and the Children’s Services Council.
